We are delighted to share that Professor Kyung Hoon Hyun, an alumnus of our lab, has been elected as a 2026 member of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (YKAST)! We sincerely congratulate him on this remarkable accomplishment!
Dr. Kyung Hoon Hyun has been selected as a member of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (YKAST)!
Our PhD alumna, Gibbeum Lee has been selected as a KAIST Jang Young-Sil Fellow. This fellowship recognizes outstanding young researchers and supports their postdoctoral work at KAIST.
We are glad that Gibbeum will continue her research in our lab as a postdoc, carrying out the project “A Perception Graph Framework for Dynamic User Experience Analysis in Built and Virtual Environments”.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Culture Technology (CT) Department at KAIST — a milestone that brought together not only current students and faculty, but also our beloved alumni from around the world.
Some of our seniors returned to campus all the way from overseas just to celebrate this special occasion with us. It was more than just a gathering. It felt like a real homecoming, filled with laughter, warm memories, and inspiring stories. Seeing everyone back together reminded us of how far we’ve come and how deeply connected we are through CT.
From research projects and thesis presentations to late-night studio collaborations, it feels like just yesterday we were all sitting in the same classrooms. Now, two decades later, we’re proud to see how our department has grown — not just in size, but in global impact and creative ambition.

This Teachers’ Day, we surprised our advisor, Professor Ji-Hyun Lee, with a small celebration.
As we handed the cake to her, she smiled and shared:
Every year, I still feel like this day is for my teachers… I didn’t realize I’ve become a teacher myself.
This moment felt even more special as Professor Lee recently heard that some of her former students plan to return to visit her for the 20th anniversary of the Culture Technology department (CTescape).
Thank you, Professor Lee, for the countless ways you guide, support, and inspire us. We’re proud to be part of your story.

Professor Being Named a 2025 New Regular Member of the NAEK
Our former lab member, Gyu-Eun Lee(이규은), has successfully completed her PhD at Seoul National University this year. Her research focused on integrating construction industry knowledge into large language models(LLM) to design a Question-Answering system for construction experts, which also underwent usability testing. After a postdoctoral position at SNU, she has now joined the 한국건설산업연구원Construction & Economy Research Institute of Korea(CERIK) in Gangnam. Gyu-Eun expressed her gratitude for the guidance she received during her master’s studies and looks forward to her new role. Congratulations!

Project Introduction

This project addresses the challenge of managing spatial information in Digital Twin (DT)–based metaverse environments. By integrating real-world spatial information with user behavioral data collected in virtual environments, we developed a framework for efficient spatial management and personalized user experiences.
Using a large-scale Minecraft testbed of Daejeon city, we collected more than 750,000 user logs and survey responses from 232 participants. Based on this dataset, we created methods for graph-based spatial importance analysis and applied Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) to detect communities and predict priority areas for spatial information maintenance.

Placemaking based on Augmented Proximity

Like the term Urban Assemblage, cities include creating local contexts through diverse networks and relationships created by human and non-human elements.The emergence of Urban Assemblage in early 2010 is changing the flow of urban research, emphasizing the importance of network understanding in cities. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the regional structure of Daejeon from the perspective of ‘visiting’ and ‘education’ through the understanding of residents in different contexts and environments. In addition, the local value is improved by solving the limitations of physical proximity through metaverse-based virtual proximity. Augmented proximity, a concept that unifies physical and virtual proximity, is important here. With the continuing increase in online communications, virtual proximity as well as physical proximity has become a common way to connect individuals. Virtual proximity refers to the psychological closeness felt by people based on their participation in a virtual space. Hence, augmenting physical proximity with virtual types is believed to enhance connectivity within social networks, and applications that consider both types have the capability to provide new forms of interaction. In the end, we plan to provide a metaverse-based solution that can actually help users along with SKT data analysis by applying the augmented proximity concept to cities.
