2022 Cultural DNA Workshop: Cultural Space on Metaverse @8/11/2022 - @8/12/2022
Our PhD alumna, Gibbeum Lee has been selected as a KAIST Jang Young-Sil Fellow. This fellowship recognizes outstanding young researchers and supports their postdoctoral work at KAIST.
We are glad that Gibbeum will continue her research in our lab as a postdoc, carrying out the project “A Perception Graph Framework for Dynamic User Experience Analysis in Built and Virtual Environments”.

Congratulations to Dr. Tse-Wei Hsu on his new faculty appointment at NYUST!
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Culture Technology (CT) Department at KAIST — a milestone that brought together not only current students and faculty, but also our beloved alumni from around the world.
Some of our seniors returned to campus all the way from overseas just to celebrate this special occasion with us. It was more than just a gathering. It felt like a real homecoming, filled with laughter, warm memories, and inspiring stories. Seeing everyone back together reminded us of how far we’ve come and how deeply connected we are through CT.
From research projects and thesis presentations to late-night studio collaborations, it feels like just yesterday we were all sitting in the same classrooms. Now, two decades later, we’re proud to see how our department has grown — not just in size, but in global impact and creative ambition.

Celebrating 20 Years of Culture Technology: A Heartfelt Reunion

This Teachers’ Day, we surprised our advisor, Professor Ji-Hyun Lee, with a small celebration.
As we handed the cake to her, she smiled and shared:
Every year, I still feel like this day is for my teachers… I didn’t realize I’ve become a teacher myself.
This moment felt even more special as Professor Lee recently heard that some of her former students plan to return to visit her for the 20th anniversary of the Culture Technology department (CTescape).
Thank you, Professor Lee, for the countless ways you guide, support, and inspire us. We’re proud to be part of your story.

We were pleased to welcome Prof. Andrew Li, former professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, to our lab as a guest speaker in preparation for our future Shape Grammar course.
His visit offered valuable discussions that will help us build a strong foundation for the class in the near future.

Professor Being Named a 2025 New Regular Member of the NAEK
Our former lab member, Gyu-Eun Lee(이규은), has successfully completed her PhD at Seoul National University this year. Her research focused on integrating construction industry knowledge into large language models(LLM) to design a Question-Answering system for construction experts, which also underwent usability testing. After a postdoctoral position at SNU, she has now joined the 한국건설산업연구원Construction & Economy Research Institute of Korea(CERIK) in Gangnam. Gyu-Eun expressed her gratitude for the guidance she received during her master’s studies and looks forward to her new role. Congratulations!

We were delighted to welcome back our beloved alumni, Tae-Ha and Chang Mi, for a heartfelt lunch gathering. It was a wonderful opportunity to catch up, exchange ideas, and receive valuable suggestions from our seniors from ETRI and Samsung. Their insights and advice were greatly appreciated, and we had an incredibly enriching and enjoyable time together. The visit strengthened our bond and left us all inspired!

We had a delightful time in the lab recently, coming together to celebrate Teacher's Day with Professor Lee. We gathered around, shared a meal, and most importantly, listened to Professor Lee’s stories and experiences as a teacher and professor. It was a heartwarming and memorable occasion, filled with laughter and appreciation for all that Professor Lee does for us.

On @6/9/2023, the Cultural Technology Department renewed the National Cheng Kung University Department of Industrial Design and the Interdisciplinary Cooperation Agreement (MOU) at the Shanghai-La Tainan Hotel in Taiwan.
Professor Lee Ji-Hyun attended the NCKU ID as a representative, and Professor Chiang-Hsu Chen (Dean, College of Planning and Design), Chun-Juei Chou (Head), Min-Yuan Ma, Yu-Hsiu Hung, and Tseng-Ping Chiu attended. Yeom Joo-sun, a Ph.D. student who is dispatched as an exchange student, was also present.

IBD 박사과정 졸업생인 임익수 선배님의 한신대학교 신임교원 발령을 축하합니다!!
한신대학교(총장 강성영)는 23일(목) 오전 11시 경기캠퍼스 장공관 1318 회의실에서 2023학년도 1학기 신임교원 발령장 수여식을 가졌다.
이날 행사는 강성영 총장과 변종석 교무혁신처장, 이상헌 사무처장, 최민성 학생복지처장, 김상욱 진로취업본부장, 나현기 교목실장과 신임교원인 정무용 교수(인문융합대학), 이종현 교수(인문융합대학), 정희진 교수(글로벌융합대학), 최지환 교수(경영·미디어대학), 김상원 교수(휴먼서비스대학), 임익수 교수(AI·SW대학)가 참석했다.
1부 행사에서는 강성영 총장의 총장 말씀 및 발령장 수여식, 배지 전달, 기념촬영과 간담회 순으로 진행됐으며, 2부에서는 교수연구팀 김진우 팀장의 사회로 각 부서별 팀장들이 대학 생활을 안내하는 오리엔테이션으로 진행됐다.
강성영 총장은 총장 말씀을 통해 “신임 교원들은 한신의 100년을 이끌어갈 주역이기 때문에 신임 교원들에 대한 기대가 굉장히 크다”며 “지금은 AI시대 속에서 교육의 본질과 한신대의 방향성을 고민해야 할 시기이다. 끊임없는 고민을 통해 훌륭한 인재를 배출하는 대학이 될 수 있도록 노력해달라”고 전했다.
이에 신임교원 이종현 교수는 “연구, 교육, 봉사를 바탕으로 한신성을 갖춘 인재 육성을 위해 애쓰겠다”고 말했다.

We were so happy to have this 4th Cultural DNA Workshop after the great success of the previous three workshops in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
This time, we decided on this workshop’s theme as ‘Cultural Space on Metaverse’. Due to the pandemic era, many people are spending more time in virtual space and interacting with each other easily. As a result, spatial research in a virtual environment and behavioral research in space are becoming more important. So we aimed to bring together researchers from academia and practitioners to share future direction and prospects for virtual space. We decided to use Gather.Town for the workshop venue.
Prof. Ji-Hyun Lee, the workshop organizer, first thanks the workshop committee from IBD, Mi Chang, Gi-bbeum Lee, Joosun Yum, Hao Yun Lee, Juhyun Lee, Ji-Young Yun, Marvin Lee, and Ho Kim for spending their time and effort to coordinate this workshop. She would like to thank the International Relations Team from KAIST for funding. She expressed gratitude to the speakers all happy to travel overseas online and share their fascinating studies: Danilo Di Mascio from University of Huddersfield, England; Ning Gu and Rongrong Yu from University of South Australia; Yu-Hsiu Hung and Kai-Ti Wang from National Cheng Kung University; Ju Hyun Lee from University of New South Wales, Australia; Mathew Schwarz and Andrzej Zarzycki from New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA; Remesh Krishnamurti and Jinmo Rhee from CMU; Tse-Wei Hsu from Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan; Andrew Li from KIT, Japan; Kyung Wook Seo from Northumbria University, England; Gwang Ya Han from Dongguk University, South Korea.
